Firestone Country Club was the backdrop to the successful Charity Golf Outing hosted by The First Tee of Greater Akron on August 15, 2018. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company was the title sponsor. Foursomes played the West Course at Firestone on August 15, 2018. Two players qualified for the putting contest with no one walking away with the $10,000 prize. The event included lunch, cocktail hour and a silent auction featuring many unique items. Many thanks to the Golf Outing Chairman, Sam Scala of Kenmore Construction and the Silent Auction Co-Chairs James Skakun of Bober Markey Fedorovich and Billie Ferguson.
The highlight of the event was the “Play with a Kid” hole. Each foursome had an opportunity to donate to The First Tee and have an Akron First Tee participant play with them for one hole. Many foursomes benefitted from the drives and putts of Solomon Petrie, Ellie Gonzalez and her sister Emmie. The kids hit drives and putts, many times beating the players, who were then allowed to use the best lie for their score. Hole #14 was very popular.
During the cocktail hour the First Tee participants talked about how the program made a difference in their lives and in their golf game. Ellie was a hit with a pre-written speech that ended with her announcement that she had won the Chip, Putt and Drive Contest that she entered earlier this summer. She is quoted as saying, “I truly learned the core value of perseverance by practicing over 100 chips in my backyard.”
The First Tee of Greater Akron is part of a nationally recognized program that mentors area youth through the game of golf. The core to the program is the Nine Core Values of honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgement. Their National School Program brings these same values to local schools with curriculum and equipment for gym teachers to enforce the nine values through golf in their gym class.
